Inclusivity

Women and youth, especially in marginalized communities, face significant barriers to accessing diabetes care, information, and healthy nutrition options. DAT is committed to transforming these exclusionary norms.

The Diabetes Awareness Trust recognizes that tackling diabetes effectively requires addressing systemic inequities. Women and youth, especially in marginalized communities, face significant barriers to accessing diabetes care, information, and healthy nutrition options. DAT is committed to transforming these exclusionary norms by empowering women living with diabetes—who often experience poorer management outcomes—and equipping young people with tools and leadership to lead healthy communities.

Evidence shows that women commonly manage lower household nutrition and carry the burden of caregiving, yet have limited access to health resources. Youth are often excluded from decision-making on their own health. DAT therefore adopts a deliberate, systematic approach to dismantling these barriers, ensuring women and young people are not only included but empowered to shape diabetes-care solutions and community wellbeing.

Our Intentional Approach to Climate Change Adaptation

Building Inclusive Health Policies & Systems

DAT partners with county health ministries to strengthen health systems that specifically target women and youth. This includes gender-sensitive training for health workers, youth-focused peer-education programs, and inclusive representation in county-level health planning committees.

Empowering Women-led & Youth-led Initiatives

Through platforms like “Youth Diabetes Champions” and women’s nutrition circles, DAT invests in leadership, mentorship, and small grants to support women- and youth-led diabetes care micro-enterprises, support groups, and advocacy campaigns.

Removing Barriers Through Access to Resources

DAT facilitates equitable access to healthy diets, screening tools, and care. We run mobile clinics and community nutrition hubs that bring services closer to underserved women and working youth, and we support digital outreach to expand access to reliable diabetes information.
