Climate Change Adaptation and Health

We recognize the intersection between climate and health and are committed to championing locally led climate adaptation solutions that protect both people and ecosystems.

Climate change is intensifying the burden of non-communicable diseases in Kenya, particularly among low-income populations vulnerable to food insecurity, heat stress, and poor air quality. At the Diabetes Awareness Trust, we recognize the intersection between climate and health and are committed to championing locally led climate adaptation solutions that protect both people and ecosystems. Our work emphasizes the critical role of food systems—shifting toward sustainable, nutritious, and climate-resilient diets to help reduce the incidence of diabetes and related NCDs.

DAT integrates climate adaptation into its programs by strengthening public awareness on the health impacts of climate risks, advocating for climate-sensitive nutrition policies, and supporting behavior change across communities. By building local capacity, promoting sustainable consumption, and reinforcing evidence-based advocacy, we empower Kenyans to make informed choices that support both planetary and human health. Our approach not only helps mitigate risks to vulnerable populations but also aligns with Kenya’s broader commitments under the BETA Agenda and global SDG frameworks.

Our Intentional Approach to Climate Change Adaptation

Integrating Climate and Health Education

We embed climate-smart health education into all outreach programs, linking climate change impacts with rising rates of NCDs. Our training and awareness campaigns build capacity for communities to adopt adaptive behaviors—from food choices to household nutrition practices—that support resilient, healthy living.

Strengthening Local Systems and Partnerships

Through collaboration with county health departments, CSOs, and agricultural networks, we strengthen grassroots systems that respond to climate-related health risks. This includes community seed fairs, food demonstrations using drought-resilient crops, and capacity-building for local health workers.

Influencing Policy and Investment for Climate-Resilient Nutrition

DAT actively engages in dialogue with policymakers to ensure that climate adaptation is integrated into national food and nutrition strategies. We advocate for investments that prioritize locally available, safe, and nutritious foods, helping communities manage climate risks while preventing NCDs.
